There's Always a First Time: Riding Ojek & Teaching

In my recent class, I talked about:
  • Breaking Routines (do unusual activities)
  • Being Spontaneous
  • Curious
  • Courageous
  • Learn to See
  • Be Prone to Ideas (have tons of ideas)
  • Asking Questions
With all those information taught in class (by me), I'm going to apply that to my own daily routine, together with the students. So we can all experience this together during the course of the semester.

I gave an ongoing assignment for students to complete until the end of semester. I ask them to break their routine (daily) and write down in their journal every single day and date it. At least one thing every day, and make it as a habit. Make it fun!

Here are some of my recent 'breaking routine' activities:

25/8 I took ojek for the first time in my entire life.
I was always hesitant to do this, but at the same time was always curious about it. Forced by necessity, I took an ojek in BSD, because I needed to be in SGU on time! Now I take ojek everywhere I go without thinking twice.

25/8 That day I also took the Trans BSDCity for the first time in my life. Now I know how long it takes to get to BSD from Ratu Plaza or Pondok Indah. It was easy, and you only pay Rp. 12,000 for a single ride. Most of the bus are really clean (the new ones) and it only takes 15-20 minutes from Pondok Indah to BSD. It's that fast.

25/8 I also found out there's an EduTown Shuttle that runs on certain hours. It takes you from EduTown (including SGU, Prasetiya Mulya) to Eka Hospital bus stop for only Rp. 4,000 (and vice versa).

16/9 I accepted the teaching offer in SGU. I have never taught before. To top that off: Last time I worked for an office was nearly 7 years ago.

20/9 First time teaching a class. Three classes! Need I say more?

24/9 Based on this article: A simplified morning routine, by Leo Babauta. This is what I did today:
  • get up early
  • drink a glass of water, and
  • started writing (so I created this brand new blog!)
To add to that, here's another good article to simplify your life:

Sleep Early, 8 PM

I usually turn myself to bed around 12-1 AM.
Today I tried something different, I slept at 8 PM. It was actually more of a need rather than a choice. So it was an easy decision to sleep early. I was simply exhausted, from waking up early and not having enough sleep for the last few days.

So what happened after I slept at 8 PM?
Well, I ended up waking up around 12 AM and simply couldn't go back to my sleep. My mind started shooting ideas and I can't make it stop. So I sat in front of my computer and started doing things.
  • I sent my first announcement to my students, through mailing list I created 2 days ago
Here are some ideas I had in mind. Usually once you have an idea, many more ideas will follow.
  • I wanted to have a blog about the teaching process in class (including my own process of learning and teaching)
  • I started thinking of making a facebook group for my students so we can bounce ideas back and forth
  • I wanna scan some business cards (front and back) and post them somewhere in the net so my students can see them as samples for their homework
